1. My house has the original sheet metal ducts under the floor. Is that worth cleaning, or am I better off replacing the whole system?

   A lot of the pre-1960 cottages and bungalows down here still run on original sheet metal in the crawlspace, and most of it is worth cleaning. Old metal is not automatically bad metal. What decides it is condition: if the joints have separated, if sections have been crushed or pulled apart under the house, or if the runs are rusted through, cleaning alone won't fix airflow. 2. What do you usually find in a Lemon Hill crawlspace?

   Three things come up again and again. Rodent intrusion is the big one, since the raised crawlspaces on these older lots are easy to get into and droppings and nesting material end up inside the ducts. Second is separated or loose joints at the takeoffs and boots, often where old tape has given up. Third is a return with no real filter housing, just a grille cut into the wall or floor, which means everything the blower pulls in goes straight through the system. 3. You mentioned old tape on the plenum. What happens if it looks like asbestos?

   On gravity-furnace-era chases and old plenums around here, the wrap and tape can be asbestos-containing. We do not scrape it, cut it, or disturb it. If we see suspect material, we stop at that point, tell you what we're looking at, and keep our work to the areas that can be cleaned safely. Testing and abatement are a separate licensed trade, and we'll say so plainly rather than working around it and hoping.

4. How fast can you get out here, and do you ever do same-day?

   Lemon Hill is a short run off the freeway corridor just south of downtown, so we're usually looking at a day or two out, sometimes same-day if a slot opens. One thing worth being honest about: on these dense blocks, parking and equipment access matter more than drive time.
